From Echo Lake to Sierra City

(From notes taken while on trail)

I took a Greyhound bus from Phoenix to Reno , then the Lake Tahoe Casino Shuttle to Lake Tahoe .

I met Mike and Josh at Lake Tahoe and we took a cab to Echo Lake to start the hike.

July 10, 2002 – We started hiking from Echo Lake Resort at about 3:30 pm. Mike and Josh were writing letters, making phone calls, and restocking food supplies. We went about 8 miles that afternoon.

July 11, 2002 – We started hiking this morning just after sunrise, about 6 or 6:30 am . We hiked until about 5 pm. We went about 22 miles today. This was the longest hike I have ever done in one day. For the last couple of hours my feet and legs ached terribly. We had to content with swarms of mosquitoes.

July 12, 2002 – I only slept about 4 and 1/2 hours last night. My legs were aching. I slept with my head slightly (too much) downhill. I kept sliding down to the top of my tent where I could hear swarms of mosquitoes.

We hiked about 19 miles today, from about 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. It looked like a big rain storm with thunder was coming on us. It rained a little bit off and on throughout the day and then a little as we were setting up our tents, but only for about 15 minutes. We are camping on a ridge with a beautiful view. We hiked along a ridge area today overlooking Lake Tahoe ; it was absolutely beautiful! My feet hurt today also, but not nearly as much as yesterday, nor am I nearly as tired as yesterday. (Taking 2 Advil did help.)

It was fun to have a number of others camp with us on the ridge. We sat around and visited (and drank hot chocolate) this evening. We camped near Judy and her dad (Steve) and sister (Bessa). Kid (Andy – from Redondo Beach ) and Rick (from Canada ) were also near by.

July 13, 2002 – I slept well last night for about 7 hours. We started hiking at about 8 am (and continued until about 5:30 pm ). We hiked about 16 miles to Hwy I-80 and then stayed at “Pooh's Corner” (a past PCT Hiker and his wife's who have opened up their home to hikers). There were about 15 people who stayed there at this cabin right on Donner Lake (near Truckee ). We slept outside. It was sure great to take a shower and have plenty to eat!

July 14, 2002 – I only slept about 4 hours at Pooh's Corner. We started out hiking about 7 am from where the PCT crosses I-80. Teresa Bujacich (who attends Bastire University ) joined us today. She set us out on a faster pace than we had hiked before. (It was her normal pace since she was trying to make up time and had to finish the trail earlier to make it back to school in the fall.) We hiked until 8 pm and ended up going about 28 miles today! We were a little confused by the map and were not really sure how far we had gone until we reached a certain lake.

I put duct tape on my feet today since I could feel the beginnings of blisters. We ran across a sign that said “No mechanized vehicles”; since I was leading the group much of that afternoon, they gave me the trail-name “Mechanized”. I think I was excited since I was on my home stretch to Sierra City .

“Seaweed Sally” and “D=RT” (pronounced ‘dirt') stayed near us tonight. Teresa also stayed nearby. We sat around mikes little stove “campfire” and visited. Mike told us the greatest stories of the earlier part of their trip and other adventures he has had.

July 15, 2002 – We started hiking at about 7:30 am and arrived in Sierra City about noon . I am not really tired or sore, but my feet are sure feeling it. I have come to appreciate how important our feet are! Just ‘walking' all day, every day.

Reflection – written on the bus ride home:
I have really come to appreciate the camaraderie on the trail. I so quickly felt close to those on the trail who had the same goal of ‘hiking the PCT'. Many of the people are so kind and such a pleasure to visit with.

Note make later: There is so much more I could write, but these were the notes I wrote down while on the trail, so I will leave it at that for now.
